55 Gallon Suggestions

I still consider myself to be new to the hobby and always larger fish have appealed to me and only now I am realizing all the flaws and problems with that. I am starting to re-do my tanks and now doing it more for the love and respect to the hobby.

First tank that I am re-doing is a 55 gallon, it is filtered with Fluval 403 (which appears to be enough) but I would really like to add an AquaClear to it. Its half-gravel and half-river rock with larger rocks, driftwood, and fake plants as decor.

At this point I would really love to get a school of about 8 Green Corys (Corydoras aeneus) and a school of about 8-10 Neon Tetras. Any other suggestions that would go well with them?
 
How about another small school of a different Tetra and/or a larger Gourami as a centerpiece fish?
 
I really like my scissortails, they are about the only schooling fish I have in my tank that actually school, they get to be about 3-5 inches or so. They are gray, but have a pretty irridescent look to them, kind of like the corys do
 
Dislike Gourami's and Scissortal (Rasbora Trilineata) is way too boring looking

In that case, I suggest you go to where you will buy the fish, see what you like, and do some research :idea2: . I got great ideas from here when I was planning my tank, only to go to the LFS and only find about half of the fish I had hoped to get, they just don't seem to carry some in my area :(
 
What about a pair of german blue rams!!

I echo the German blue rams suggestion. Or if you want, even Bolivian Rams. They are beautiful 3-4 inch fish rather like the blue rams, but I hear they can be even more personable than blue rams. I would get 4 of them or so, and let them pair off, then return the ones that are not paired, or you can keep them, but that might cause territorial issues.

The blue rams are great fish. I could watch mine all day long.
