55g stocking possibilities?

I just got a 55g to put in my room and was thinking of putting in some Royal Red Discus. How many of these can I have or what else could be put in with this type? The last thing I want to do is overstock but as far as swimming needs, what is possible with a 55g? I do intend to do more filtration than needed so freedom of movement is what I am concerned about.

I have never had Discus but I have done alot of reading about them. I think you could get a pair and then mix in some gouramis like blue or pearl. Get some bottom feeders aswell. I would get 4-5 then mix in 3-4 gouramis or something similar.go with 3 or more to establish a pecking order, with just 2 discus, 1 will just be chased kind of all day.

I would also recommend this.. He has some incredible Discus. Do a search on his name. But the problem I would see it that they would get to big for that tank to keep to many.
If you don't go with Discus but want some color, maybe a 55 gallon plant tank with some Harliquins and some loaches that would be a kinda cool setup.
