Deciding on tank shape can be tough. I think it depends on what you want to house, and what kind of aquascaping you'll have, as well as personal taste. Surface area, not the number of gallons, is largely what dictates how many fish you can keep, so sometimes it's better to choose a longer/wider tank over a taller one.
I had a 45g with a 12" x 36" footprint. It had a very large viewing window (36" x 24"h), but it was a nightmare to aquascape! When I got into live plants, I found there was room for background plants, and foreground plants, but no room in the middle for anything else. I've since switched to a tank with a 36" x 18" footprint, and I'm much happier.
If you're planning on rockwork for your cichlids, you might want to look for a tank that's deeper front to back so you can build caves and still have room for them to swim in the middle/front. JMO :)
