55gal stocked tank and i know nothing about fish

Ya they should have told your roommates, but chances are they didn't know themselves. There are a lot of irresponsible fish dealers, thats why you should always research before you buy so you know what you are getting into.

Please do the water change ASAP--as in right now. The sterlet fish sounds like a goner and should be euthanized to prevent further suffering. Even though some of those fish might work in your tanks, it's really best for the fish to be returned to the store. Your tank is in the cycling process and fish will keep dying until your water parameters are in check. We are being serious when we recommend relocating as many fish as possible.

separated the sterlet into a gallon plastic pitcher filled with water form the tank so he can cool down...., put the thermometer in there also to see what the temp becomes... figure ill just rotate more tank water in there little by little to keep the oxygen up?

also we dont have any tanks to relocate them

im telling them to toss the feeder fish and change the water but they dont want to because "they all look fine"... /sigh

Your old tank water is no doubt full of poisonous compounds killing your fish. Putting that fish in a container of posionous tank water is not doing it it ANY favors. If he is laying on his back and moving his gills spastically placing him in ammonia ladden water will only kill him quicker. Do the responsible thing and euthanize the fish to end his suffering. Get a larger container of water and put it in the freezer. Wait until a thick 2" layer of ice forms in the container, therefore the water under the ice is freezing cold. Break the ice and place the fish in to the freezing water underneath the ice. Place the container back in the freezer so that the water does not warm up and the fish dies immediately.

Please do a WATER CHANGE now--or you will soon have more dead fish.

Wow.. yea do some water changes.. I would do 50% water changes every day until you figure out what is going on. Did you get a siphon with the setup to perform a water change?

Most of the fish you have together are incompatible, and the tank is beyond overstocked. The best thing you can do is pick 1 or 2 fish that you really like, then add a couple tankmates that will compliment those fish. We can help you with that process but you really need to take majority of those fish back to the store where you bought them.

bump for update from OP

My roommates are a little hard headed apparently. I told them last night to return the fish and I wake up this morning and the fish are still there and they are gone. The sterling is still alive but just laying on the gravel (substrate?). Also I have removed about 7 of the little feeder goldfish, leaving about 5 I still need to catch and remove.

also would it be better to do about 2 or 3 25% water changes spaced a few hours apart?

New Tank Syndrome apparently.

As long as the water you are putting into the tank has no chlorine/chloramine or other harmful chemicals/metals(which your dechlorinator product will remove/neutralize) and the temp is similar you should be just fine doing as many water changes as you like.
