I've got my 5 gallon (pic1, pic2) set up with one male Betta. After reading these forums for a week or so, you guys have really made me consider getting an African Dwarf Frog. He would have spots to hide as you can see in the picture, and I'm not really concerned about overstockign with just a Betta and ADF. But what are the best things I can feed the ADF? I can't really do frozen stuff until summer, because I share my refrigerator/freezer with my roommate and I wouldn't want to stink it up. Thanks a lot guys!

An adf should be fine in that tank. When i had adfs i fed them bloodworms, but they also ate whatever else they came across (flakes, pellets, algae tabs)

If you don't want the bloodworms to contaminate the rest of the freezer you can put t in a zip lock bag, then wrap it in newspaper, then in another large ziplock, and if you want in a plastic bag or tupperware container after that (don't forget to label it "fish food")

I feed my ADFs freeze dried tubifex worms. They gobble them up, but I have to feed it to them by hand because the female bettas I have in there will snap that stuff up pretty quick if I don't. They've learned to associate my hand with dinner time..so they scoot right over when I go to feed them.

That's the only problem I have with ADFs in tanks with fish, is figuring out how to feed them without the fish taking it all. Those frogs are so darned uncoordinated..lol..it's a wonder they survive in the wild at all ! Some folks use a straw to put the food down right in front of them...which is a good idea as well.

I think an ADF will be fine in that tank Chris ! :)

Great, thanks for the input, although I'm thinking of labeling the container "people food" and seeing what my roomie says :joke: Yep, the tank is done cycling as I've had it for around 6 months :-). I've cleaned it out and wiped the gravel of any bacteria a few weeks ago, but I do have a penguin mini with a bio wheel on it. Ammonia levels were practically zero even after I cleaned out the gravel, so it's all good :-)

:OT: I guess your roomie wouldn't do to well at my house. As well as being a fish keeper I also enjoy the sport of fishing. At any given time during fishing season you will find a container of live eartworms in my fridge. They only ever got out once and they were everwhere. :)

If you want african dwarf frogs, get two or three. They like each others company.

Do you think 2 dwarf frogs would do well in my tank? Look at the above pictures to see what it's like. There's only one dark hiding spot and one semi-hiding spot.

*edit* Also, do ADFs eat food off the substrate? It would be nice to have a couple automatic vaccuums in my tank :-P

I find my ADF tank is messier than my betta tanks. The ADFs have poor eyesight and sometimes don't notice their blood worms even when they are literally draped over the frogs' heads. I wouldn't count on them to keep the substrate clean.

Also, I can't really tell how big your gravel is. Make sure it cannot fit into the frog's mouths--they feed by inhaling their food, don't want them inhaling gravel by accident.

An african dwarf frog would make a nice addition to your 5-gallon betta tank, iamchris. They are interesting and fun to watch. :) I'm also considering adding an ADF to my 10 gallon. I find that they eat frozen brine shrimp very easily and they gobble it up. Just make sure to get the food to the bottom otherwise they won't be able to eat. And frozen brineshrimp is quite clean and doesn't emit any odor. Just put into a ziplock bag.
