I know the bigger the tank the better off you are but in this case I only have a 65 gallon hexagon tank to work with. Is it possible to turn this into a salt water tank?? The worker at the lfs told me that hexagons cant be used for salt water. Before I spend the time and money on trying to do so, I just wanted to get other advise. I think the lfs was just trying to sale me a bigger tank to make a little money off me!
I will be using an Emperor 280 and a protein skimmer. I plan on having a FOWLR with a dwarf lion, maroon clown (big), and maybe a small niger trigger. (the fish selection could change--- any ideas??) All advise is welcome.

I currently have 125 gallon FOWLR and everything is great but with the extra tank and filters I was hoping for a second beautiful tank to enjoy!!!!
Thanks

Hexagon tanks can be used for saltwater set-up, even though it's not the most ideal option. You only need the biological filtration for saltwater set-up. For this purpose, use at least 3" deep live sand and live rocks. I have a suggestion for your fish selection. I strongly discourage you from putting Niger Trigger in your tank. It gets too big for your size and type of tank (especially hexagon tank), and it's not a good idea to put it with an inactive fish like dwarf lionfish. It's very likely that your future lionfish will be constantly harassed by your Niger. There are a lot of small and colorful fish you can put in your tank. So think about other possibilities. Lastly, make sure that your tank has been completely cycled before you put any fish in it. Good luck.

No way on the niger trigger...they get just under 2' long and are quite active. You can easily make this into a SW tank, but you will have to avoid bigger/active fish as a hex doesn't allow much room for horizontal movement. Look into fish like grammas, basslets, blennies, gobies, and cardinals as they appreciate more of a cliff-faced habitat with lots of caves and crannies to inhabit. Dottybacks and the smaller species of dwarf angelfish would also be acceptable choices.

I have the same tank and want to use it for saltwater. Do you have any pictures of your tank that I can see?
