72 Gallon Community Stocking Ideas with Dwarf Cichlids

Hi, I am setting up a new 72 gallon tank and am interested in some stocking ideas from you.

I will have in the tank half a dozen small clown loaches, a couple bristlenose and/or clown pleco's and probably a school of Rummynose Tetra's.

Now I am also thinking about 3 or 5 small angelfish and some dwarf cichlids to round out the tank.

My question - how many and what type of dwarf cichlids what you suggest as a good fit in this mix. Thanks

I'm fond of Apistogramma Cacatuoides and Borelli, and the Dwarf Rams. For a tank that size, you could put in a trio of cacatuoides and a pair of borelli or Rams with no problem. For the apistos, be sure to provide small flower pots as caves, in case (or when) they breed. Also take a look at http://www.apistogramma.com. It's a site dedicated to Dwarf Cichlids.

72 gallons -- I'm jealous.

Hey Superstein. Though they grow rather slowly, six clown loaches will eventually be too many for a 72g, IMO. Regarding dwarf cichlid stocking suggestions, I'd vote for SA dwarfs, which include (as mentioned) Apistogrammas, for a community type setting. However, some species of Laetacara or some Rams would probably be better choices if you intend to keep Angels, as these cichlids (on the whole) tend to be less belligerent. There are many Apisto species but the water requirements for them can vary considerably. There are other dwarves that you could choose, but SAs may be easier to acquire than some African or CA dwarves.

OK, maybe I will cut back to 5 or 4 clown loaches - LOL

thanks for the input - and tanks for the apistogramma web site. Thespecies you named seem pretty colorful - which is what I am looking for (it makes the wife happy)

Another one not mentioned, which is my favourite for the community is the Keyhole cichlid. I love these little guys.

You will be ok for 5 to 7 years in that tank with your clowns. they grow very slowly. They also like to be in groups and will be healthier. That would be a good number.
