Hey,
I was planning on buying a new 55 gal tank and putting two Oscars in it and hopefully that would breed. But one of my friends is getting rid of his 75 gal so I will probably get that. I was wondering what kind of fish should i put in it. I want an agressive cichlid with a good personality (and that will breed). I think two Oscars would do great in a 75 gal, but what do you guys think. Also, what kind of filteration do you think I should use. For the 55 gal I wanted 2 Penguin 330's. I was going to use an UGF but someone said that I wouldn't want to use a UGF with oscars.
 
pretty much a 75g is just the right size for only 1 oscar not two if you want to keep two you need at least a 125g.

for the filter the penguin 330s are good buti would go with 2 AC 500s or 2 emperor 400s, or a canister filter of some sort maybe a fluval 404 or the ehiem equiv. the ugf is out of the question since oscars dig and then they would make the ugf not work since they dig and would dig a hole down to the ugf and render it useless.
 
I think i'm going to end up with 1 Emp 400 and a canister or 2 Penguin 330's and a canister. No UGF for me. I have talked to other people and they said 2 oscars would be fine in a 75. But I will look into it more. Any ideas for other fish instead of oscars?
 
everyone i talked to says one oscar for a 75g and two in a 125, but u can try it if u want i jsut dont support it. you could try some JDs or maybe a pair of red devils, or my fav blue acaras, maybe a black nasty or a pair of jags.

You can keep 2 Oscars...but, get them while they are very small and enjoy growing them out. When they get too big you can donate, or trade them for something else. Oscars have great personalities! I've seen some actually "play catch" with a pingpong ball. They seemed to love it!
The filtration I would use (not at all telling you what to use :) ) would be a canister (Filstar) filter and a good HOB (AquaClear).
Skip the live plants and have a few places with bubbles from a Rena air pump. Good luck and enjoy it!

I guess I am not real sure about why someone who has 2 red bellied pacus in a 55 with many other fish is so concerned with another aquarist keeping 2 oscars by themselves in a 75?
 
You definantly would need a 125. They'll be fine in there for a year or so with good filtration. Maybe you could just set it up now and start saving for the bigger one. Two 16" fish in a 48" tank is pretty cramped.
 
Full sized oscars can hit 16'', I know this for fact b/c I've seen them in person. That's why a 75 (48x18x18) would be a bit cramped although it would work for some time (Id say once they hit 13-14 inches its time to move or else they'll begin to bruise their snouts :( )
 
2 oscars would be fine IF THEY GET ALONG. 2 of most large cichlids would be fine IF THEY GET ALONG. daz the problem w/only 2 fish, if the more dominant (usually bigger) 1 does not like the smaller 1, it could get brutal for the subordinate. having more fish would disperse the aggression but then a 75G isn't big enuff to throw more in...
