I saw this 77g bow front tank at a petstore and it's very nice looking. For $1000 I can get the tank with stand, 2 Aquaclear 300 filters, 2 tube lights, canopy, heater, and a bunch of other stuff. Does this sound like a good price?. Would I be able to put my Oscar and JD in there together? I think that is the max. in price that I can go. I would hate to have to return my JD to the lfs because he is a very nice looking fish. I kinda had to take him along with the Oscar or the previous owners would have flushed him. I'm getting a free 25g fish tank soon. I think I will just fix it up and sell it. I t was originally a saltwater tank. It has everything with it. It's about 20 yrs. old though. How much does anyone think a re-sealed 20 year old 25g tank would go for?

In that size tank... one or the other. Oscars need 75g for 1 roughly. And a JD will kill an Oscar off fairly easily, especially if it wants the space.

I've never had a JD kill an Oscar.... but, I have always had several large cichlids in a tank, not just two.

Is that bow front 48" long? The problem with bow fronts is that they tend to lose a lot of width at the ends. This makes it difficult for bigger fish to turn around. You'd be much better off getting a 125g tank which should cost less money. Or, if you are limited to a 48" tank then look at the 120 gallon 48" x 24" x 24". There is also a 60" 120 gallon tank available.

Any of these would be more useful for bigger cichlids than the bow front.

jeez i cant imagine spending 1k on a tank. the local newspaper is lways a weath of people getting rid of large tanks. a thousand bucks is a lot of money. you could probably have a tank built for you and make some kind of stand for a third of that.

The bow-fronts are very expensive compared to a regular tank. His deal did include the hood, filters and other stuff... which all add up.

All of my bigger tanks (180, 120, and 60) were bought used and I saved money. But, they all had scratches on the glass, framework and stands. The tanks I bought new are still in perfect condition and I make sure to keep them that way.

yeah i guess thats true. i just keep thinking with a thousand buck i could get 4 or 5 55g out of the paper and go crazy setting up new cichlid tanks!

I'm going through exactly that right now!!! A few months ago I had a single 180 gallon tank. Then I added a 20 gallon in my studio.... Then a 60, then a 120, then a 10 for the fry from my Midas cichlids.... And I just found out that I am being given two 55 gallon tanks. They will make good breeding tanks, which means I need three more 10s for fry....

Going from 1 to 10 tanks in just a few months! :dance

I respectfully disagree with the JD Killing off the Oscar.

JD's are not that tough of a fish. IMO they are in the middle of the SA/CA agression pack. Top 15 on the aggression scale.

Oscars however are nasty, very territorial and in the top 8 of the aggression scale. It would very easily hold its own against a Jack.

Although my big male JD has killed it's fair share of fish..never has it done so against anything that was an equal or greater opponent. (except other male JD's when in a territory for breeding scuffle) I still remember my 4 inch female synspilum just kicking my 7.5 male JD's butt up and down the tank (a 55 gallon) they lived together for years in that tank after that until my big girl recently passed.

If it was me. I would give it a try to feel it out. You will know quite fast how things are going to go. That is assuming that they are both adult fish. You can always take back one or the other.

One thing to keep in mind though. If you decide to keep the JD you will be able to put quite a few more fish in that tank as tankmates than if you kept the oscar.
