Hi everybody
I have just gotten my new 8 gallon fish tank (the "Quantum Aquarium", DrsFoster&Smith) and the darned thing doesn't have a lid. It has holes at each corner, where one could presumably attach a cover, but I haven't been able to find that corresponding product.

If ANYBODY can tell me the specs on what kind of acrylic to purchase for this, I'd be so grateful. Thanks you!!

I think you may have a hard time finding a hood for that tank. It looks like they made it just to have the "clip on" light on it. Plus 8 gallons isn't a very common size.

Yes, probably...

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm probably on the verge of a "DIY" task here. Looking at acrylic sheeting online, not sure what thickness to get....

Seeing as how you'll only need a small piece, and won't forseeably be keeping any strong jumpers in a tank that size, 1/8" plexiglass would work wonderfully.

And you can get Plexiglass at any Lowe's or Home Depot cut right to size. Sure saves you the trouble...

FYI, I saw that Quantum Aquarium on the Foster and Smith website, and it shows that tank having an open top. How is the clip-on light? Is it strong enough to support plant growth?

Correct, it is an open top. Clip on light seems pretty sturdy, think it's billed as 11 watts, doubtful that it's really great for plants. I have a single live plant, "sprite" they called it at LFS- seems to be doing well enough, tank is also in indirect sunlight.

Probably Watersprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides). Does it look like that? It's a medium to low light plant and from what I have heard it is pretty prolific stuff. Which, in my mind, is a good thing. I have some fast growing hardy plants and I absolutely love them. Of course, I happen to be a stay-at-home dad so the tank is always there and staring at me, so I don't mind doing frequent water changes, pruning and general maintenance. In fact, 5 days between water changes is a LONG time for me.

Ceratopteris thalictroides!

Yep, that's what it is! :) LOL, "plantgeek" hahaha
Anyway, it's a good little plant for my good little fish in my good little tank, and I like it a lot. :p
