Hello everyone!!!

Brief background:

I've briefly owned a 30 gallon FW tank and a 10g piranha tank, neither for much longer than 6 months (due to moves, not due to miss-care). I have been gathering knowledge, but this is still somewhat new to me...

With that in mind, I recently got my hands on a 90 gallon surf-line tank from a family member. It has never been used, and came with a stand, hood, light, sump, filter, bio-wheel, and pump (all of which are pictured below).

For about a week I entertained the idea of doing a reef tank. However after a great deal of research, the reality is I'm not ready for that ("tank master" wise, nor financially). So that puts us here, ready to rock the freshwater world :headbang2:headbang2

Last week I put the entire tank together, and it currently has been sitting full of water for about 5 days. I did this for two reasons: (a) I wanted to stress test my tank for leaks and whatever (its 5 years old and has never had water in it, plus has moved from New York to South Carolina and now to Georgia), and (b) Make sure I didn't notice any groaning from my floorboards.

So far, so good, the tank has passed. These are a few pictures of the build:

And a glamor shot:

It looks pretty sweet. If you're into giant tanks full of water and nothing else, lol.

Next steps:

In the next few days I'm going to drain the tank completely and install a GFCI in the tank's power outlet. Additionally, while the tank is empty, I want to do all of the (or most of the) aquascaping. I have literally nothing at this point. However, what I want to do is an Atlantis (yes, I know, very original, ha ha) theme, with like city ruins.
  • I just got 6 bags of Quikrete Play Sand, will that be okay /safe?
  • What can use something to glue structures together (??).
  • Also, any recommendations for awesome underground sculpture dealers in the Atlantis theme?

I also need to better understand my filter and it's process. Any help here would be great. Should I buy some scrubbies and put them in the third tray (the instructions say "add media if you wish" - is that what this means?)

Finally, I may plant one or two plants, is my light okay? (It says T-10)

Following all that....

I would love to be pointed in the right direction of what chemicals I need, or what fish to start with, etc. Thanks in advance!!!

I'll update this thread with pictures as it progresses. Hopefully it turns out awesome. Thanks guys.

If you are using play sand RINSE RINSE RINSE and when you think it's done RINSE again.
I put the sand in a bucket and then put the hose in the sand and stirred it around till the water ran clear and added it a bucket at a time.

As for fish what kind of image are you looking for?

I am partial to Convict Cichlids and Silver dollars. But it depends on if you want a few fish or large schooling groups

Congrats on the tank

Such a great tank. I saw one at "that pet place" and was in love.

The only suggestion I can really offer is to think about that location. Sunlight = Algae problems

Good catch Vic

Thanks! I'll be sure to do that. When you say the water ran clear, do you mean you would add water, stir stir stir, then drain water, and gauge clarity by the drainer water?

Thanks! Unfortunately thats really the only place it can go. My little townhome isn't that big. I'll be sure to keep the blinds closed at all times, and if it needs them, I could install some curtains...

Good catch Vic

Thanks for the reply!

Have you considered moving your pirhanas to the tank? 10g is generally considered MUCH too small for these fish. I'm sure they'd appreciate the extra space. They're also very active and would make a nice focal point in your dining room.

I know how it goes with a townhouse, the wife and I live in one as well. Sometimes you just end up needing to make due with what you have. :)

Those were from a tank about 2 years ago, that unfortunately I had to sell off (well, sell the tank, return the fish to the store). They are no longer with me.

Exactly! Cheers!

I put some sand in a bucket and stuck the water hose in the bucket and left it there until the water ran out clear. Be sure to use the hose to stir the sand a bit.

I'm moving into a town house soon......
tanks might end up in the bathroom hahaha

Oh like just overflowing the bucket. So do this outside. Got it haha. Thanks.

Townhomes are great, I just wish I had more room. I see so many tanks on craigslist and in stores and I'm like...man if only I had the room...

I just graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill actually and left NC to head to GA. Cary is a great city.

Thanks!
