Hi All,
so I just built a 90 gallon tank stand for a friend of mine and im wondering how much i could sell them for on craigslist or eBay locally? i have a pic of it without stain. thanks for the input!

Probably not much. The craigslist market for stuff like that is next to nothing. Better off trying to get some local stores to buy it, but I feel like that would cause an insurance nightmare. However, if you were to sell them, I would list it for 60 to 75 dollars depending on your cost of materials.

up here in Alberta, big al's sells the particle board stands (brand: stingray stand) for around $100 for an 80 gallon size. a real wood stand is much better than the stupid particle board. if the stain/cupboard arrangement/shelves could be customized i'd pay 100 for a good quality wooden stand, brand new. American pricing would be a bit lower than that, but i think the stand is worth more than what gt mentioned.

Oh.. he said he had looked around at a few stores and online and couldn't find one for less than 300. so we went to the local lumber yard and got all the wood for about 100 and built him one.

You would be better off advertising it as a model and offering custom wood types and finishes. This way you don't spend a dime until you have a customer that would pay 50% down. If its custom they might pay up to $350 for a hardwood (oak/birch plywood) and maybe $175 for pine. There is a market for custom made finished stuff.

oh yea.. I wouldn't offer strictly one type of stand/cabinet. they would be able to customize to there liking.

got some stain and clear coat on it today. I really like the way the color of the stain turned out! :headbang2:
gonna post pics on craigslist and see if i get any responses.

Looks nice! I agree with the idea on offering custom building with a model to show your work. People do have their own ideas for what matches their home as well as what size aquariums, or how many aquariums they want it to hold. If you can offer better prices than your LFS and better quality, I would think you'll have interest.

I think custom building(with a deposit upfront) would be the way to go. If you have extra time you might build a few of the common sizes(55,75,125) to have on hand if people want something right away.

Nice job on the stand.
