Hi there,

I am thinking of buying a 3 year old 90 gallon tank (with wood stand) for $250 Cnd. Anyone have a comment about this price? Any idea how long a tank will last? Is 3 years old consider fairly new? I believe it was a salt water tank - should this be a concern as I plan to use it for cichlids (fresh water).

Thanks a lot,

Dave

Well... you have to look at the condition of the tank and stand. Are there any cracks, stratches, leaks, etc, etc ?

You would need to rinse the tank and the equipment well, just to get rid of any remaining salt content.

Good deal though if all is well! :D

I think that sounds like a pretty good deal, if you do a search on here, I know the question has been asked about cleaning a tank that was saltwater to make it freshwater safe, just a little bit of extra elbow grease needed ;) . As long as the seals look good, I would have no reservations buying a tank that old. The one I just sold was at least 7 or 8 years old and it was in great shape

Thanks for the info. I just talked found out that the tank does not come with a hood / glass slips or a light. Can one buy just the glass top covers for a tank? I have not seen these sold separately.

cheers

for my 90 gallon I suspended shop lights from the ceiling over the tank no canopy neccesary. you could cut a piece of plexi to go over the tank openings?

sometimes you can go to a glass shop and they will cut you pieces to fit, for very cheap, or a local store may be able to order you whatever you need, ask around, you shouldn't have a problem finding something to work.

Thanks for all of the help. I decided to buy the tank. The avg price online is $500 for a used 90 gallon tank with stand. $250 seems to be a good deal. The seller is moving this Friday and "must" get rid of the tank ASAP.

Cheers

That is a very good deal for a 90g tank. New, all glass tanks with stand can go for $1K+. The only thing with "used" is make sure there are no leaks, if it is an exsisting tank with fish etc, it should not pose a problem. If the used tank has sat empty for over a year, I would definately test it before buying. When I mean test, I mean FULL of water for at least 3 days. Failures of seams and / or glass will happen either immediately, or after several days.

Thanks for the info - the seller backed out and sold it to someone else for more $. Nice guy. I ended up buying a 150 gallon for $700. The current owner has not had fish in it and it is only a few months old (from Big Als). Same tank at Al's is over $1100. I pick it up on Sat!! Very excited.
