For my yellow lab and (albino) ice blue zebra, who are near their max size of 11" put together, is it possible to keep them in only a 30 (or less) gal tank? IF I only wanted the tank to have misc stuff like plants/moss, shrimp, snails. (Not sure if plants/moss are easy enough for me.)

Could I keep them in a small sectioned-off part of a larger tank (46-125 gal)?

If they need 30-37 or 38-46 gallon, then maybe I'd do it, but add a peacock and I suppose I can find a little more interesting stuff to add?

30 gallon is bare minimum for malawi cichlids and usually just one small species is all that will more. I don't think these guys would be very happy in a small tank with just the two of them. Plus you have to think of possible ggression the Ice blue can get pretty mean and yellow labs are rather passive so there is no other fish for the zebra to target and there is a chance he will stress out you yellow lab.

As far as the the shrimp and snails I doubt they would last long. Shrimp would be eaten almost immediatly and I think the snails would be soon after. Malawi cichlids can be really agressive so it can be difficult to find suitable tank mates.

If you went with a larger tank and added some more labs and a couple girl for the ice blue you would have a more successful tank. I don't know much about peacocks so I'm not sure about what their capatabilty would be.

Hope this helps :)

you could keep other fish in a small sectioned off tank at the size you suggested 46 to 125gal with the bigger tank more so, as for inverts snails and shrimps they will find a way over and will become a snacky treat, as for mbuna in a 30gal those two could live together but blue2frye was right on with the added stress and aggression of two different species in a small setup so for that to work your going to have to add a couple more so its spread out aggression, i would do a smaller type cichlid like saulosi, afra or shell dwellers from tanganyika only one species i mentioned and only at 5 cichlids 1m/4f in a 30gal..

Still thinking about maybe doing a 30-46 gallon with the yellow lab and zebra... and now thinking I should keep 4-7 of the jewels and breed them a little bit (I have at least one mated pair, not sure which are the mated pair but can probably narrow it down to 3-4 lol). Maybe a breeder or tall tank? I prefer it not to be long but maybe that's better for them, I know there's a lot I don't know...

A crayfish is likely to be okay in this tank? Lobster is also probably ok? Fiddler crabs probably okay? I read that they try to kill most peaceful fish lol. I would ideally like to find some larger aggressive shrimp or snails that would survive fine with these others too. Angels are not okay? I want to stick with almost all 'hardier'/easier stuff however, so maybe angels are too tricky anyway.

And then I would prob have loaches in this tank.

(The yellow lab & zebra have already been living together with the jewels -- and extra aggressive mbuna -- just fyi. I know that it's different if they had no other tank mates to target, like you said.)

I have read the thread several times and still really don't understand. The best advise I can give from what I understand is do some more research on the fish you already have. Dont get anything else till you pan out you current stock and fully understand minimum requirements for what you have and plan to get.

hey mostlycichlids is correct, all you have to do is google a certain species and you will attain alot of helpfull info for that fish, the thing is with africans wether its mbuna, tanganyika's or west african species they are all aggressive and really aggressive in the small confines of a tank so i would say bare minimum would be a 30gal for a group of smaller africans at 3" 5 total of one species will work, if you want alot of diversity of different african cichlids you will need to get the largest tank possibly you could afford the 125gal you stated earlier in this post will most def be the best choice for you with the length it will make for an awesome tank and your imagination is the limit on aquascaping it would be fun for you, as for inverts most africans eat these things and those inverts as lobsters are truely crayfish from different parts of the world there isnt a true freshwater lobster like the ones you eat at red lobster, hehehe, its a markup theme from petshops, now i have seen some huge crayfish and i think they taste just like lobster well i buy some from meijers all the time and they are tastey aye, but in an aquarium they will eat or kill smaller fish if they can catch them there are some hobbyist that will keep them in the tanks with fish and it may at times work but those are the ones that are in a pretty large setups and have tons of places to hide from aggression, honestly i hold true to having inverts in a tank to themselves and only having certain lake cichlids to a system like all mbuna in a tank or all tanganyika's in a tank, what is it that you have right now in fish, tank and inverts are all of these in one tank right now or do you have them in different tanks, hey also since you live close to me are you a member of our fish club in louisville called LTFF if not you can become a member we have all sorts of hobbyists in our club from live bearers to cichlids some are old some are young and we have children there as well we have a meeting once a month every second sunday of the month with a guest speaker that specializes in a certain catagory of aquarium fish tomorrow we have our meeting and our speaker is from goliad farms out of texas he specializes in livebearers and the end of each meeting we have a mini auction on fish and equipment i will be donating some juvie Melanochromis chipokae mbuna 3 of them and others bring in some stuff they breed as well for BAP points if your interested in attending it is located at the bon air library the address is 2816 del rio place louisville, ky near the bon air shopping center start time is 7:30pm tomorrow sunday you will not be obligated to join or pay anything in member dues til you decide if it is for you than i believe the member dues are like 10 dollars a year for membership my name is mcmichael all you have to do is ask for me and i will introduce you to the club and its a friendly club no swearing or drinking just an old fashion family oriented fish club, i hope you have the time to check it out if not its understandable and every second sunday you could check it out there you will get hands on information and we have a yahoo talk group were we all stay in touch with, take care my friend i hope to see a new face at our club..

Thanks for the invite... very good to know. Maybe someday... I kind of like online groups vs meeting a bunch of people at once :) I do have some things I want to buy/trade for, and some things I don't want (not much that's very good though).

cool let me know i may want to trade fish stuff with you, what do you have and or need..

I think WW should list all the tanks they have, the sizes of them and the exact contents....before anyone recommends stocking options..
