drop a pinch of the flakes under the water level and they will sink to the bottom rather then float.

a much better way of feeding because it reduces the amount of air that the goldfish takes in, but then it puts the goldfish into a good position to be attacked by the lobster. they aren't the brightest creatures. no matter what, you should thank your girlfriend for her gift, but either take them back and get more appropriate fish or get a larger tank, those feeders will reach a foot long or so.
