I'm redoing my 10g Quarantine Tank. I'm thinking of putting an air pump driven Sponge filter. There's a couple of them out there, I'm sure they're all good. Does anyone know the best one in their opinion or the worst one not to pick? Just thought I'd ask before I buy one.

I hear the Hydro’s are good, but I kind of like the ones that can suction cup to the back glass.

Thanks. I went to the LFS and got what they had available which was the H III. It didn't come with a box. Do you know how to put a airstone with it. I don't see any special connections for it. I guess I should just drop the airstone in one of the top holes. Does that sound right?

I have the Hydro III (3).

There's a part between the spone portion and the part the connects to the airline tubing that goes to the airpump. It's a couple of big holes. I'm thinking if you want to add an airstone, you'd have to shove the airline tubing down of the big holes, remove the base of the filter, and then connect the airstone to the airline tubing after it was threaded through one of the big holes. Other than that, I don't see how else you can use an airstone with the Sponge Filter. I'm thinking they might've shown it on the box, but I didn't purchase mine with a box. Therefore I couldn't see it. Do you think there's another way to connect it?

Thanks for you help and patience Darkangel.

The center of the post between the clear tube and the sponge, ( where you say big holes?), should fit an airline. The way you use an airstones is to attatch it with a small piece of hose to the bottom of this section, slip it down inside the sponge. Re-assemble the filter minus the clear tube, push your air line through the clear tube, attatch it to the center of the cross, slide the clear tube down and attatch it. That does it. You do not need an airstone as a side note. I do not use them in any of my filters. I hope you understand this, if not I will try again with pictures. No problem with the help PikeLee. Later

I think there's some confusion. I know how to hook up and set the sponge filter up with the airline. I was asking if anyone knew how to connect the Hydro up in conjuction with an Airstone. I have read it in some articles where they use the Hydro and an airstone at the same time. But they do not explain how. I was wondering if it has a presetup way for that. Maybe a peice where you plug the airline, and another peice where you plug in the airstone also. But it's cool...I figured it out.

I added the airstone so that it sits in the middle of the empty cylinder of the sponge. It rests on the base. The bubbles are much smaller than just using a regular air tube to the center cylinder of the Sponge filter. It works well. I see debree stuck on the sponge. Take it easy there Darkangel and many thanks again.

Hey DarkAngel,

I bought another one of the Hydro Sponges for a 20g I got. For some reason Tanks just keep coming into my house.

Anyways, since I was able to get a brand new one with the box, I looked around it to see if there's anything with airstones. There is a little section on the side that say "can be used with an airstone"

It states to just connect the airstone to the bottom of the bull's eye, then put the bullseye onto the strainer portion. If your airstone doesn't fit. Then you can use and peice of airline tubing under the bull eye instead and then attach the airstone onto that.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Cheers.
