I've read some bad things about the chain stores. Things like having bad stock, unknowledgeable employees, mislabeled fish, ect, so I was hesitant to buy from our local Pet Smart. I've used the local fish stores, there's 3 Mom and Pop type stores that I have used. Most of the fish I've bought from the LFS's haven't done well. The fish have had parasites and diseases. Some didn't even make it through the night. Their tanks were in poor condition with dead fish, fin rot and ich and two out of the three are very expensive.

I finally figured what have I got to lose with Pet Smart and bought some fish. They were healthy, so I went back and continue to do so. I haven't lost one fish that I've bought from them. Their tanks are in good shape and probably 95% of the fish look healthy. I've found 3 employees that are very helpful and have good knowledge of the hobby and I will only buy from them. I think their prices and policies are very good.

So, I just want to say that not all the chain stores are bad. I'm sure some are, but I was scared from trying them because of all the negative experiences.

The chains are much like the mom and pops. Some are just fine and have knowledgeable employees and some are not. Each of us has to judge the local stores and decide which ones to frequent. In my case the Petco is going out of business and its none too soon. The Walmart, never a truly good source, has better cared for fish. Our Petsmart is so-so and the 2 mom and pops in the area are OK but not great. There is a really nice store in a town 45 miles away but not for my day to day needs. Its just too far for most things.

Petco and wal*mart are fish hell. DON'T BUY FROM THEM. Pet smart isn't as bad but...

im from jersey as well. what petsmart are you talking about? There are about 5 stores in a 5 mile radius from my house.

It really has to do with who owns the store and if they care or not. I live in a large city we have tons of crappy fish stores from mom & pops to Pet smart. We also have alot of good fish stores that are mom & pop & Petsmarts. I am new to the hobby so I have been trying to locate a great fish store but no luck yet. So far from what I have seen if the store has a good owner/manager it is well kept & fish are healthy no matter what the name of it is.

I think it really depends on who's managing the department and who his staff are. A few years ago, the fish department in the Petco near where I work was amazingly good. Now, however, it's visibly gone downhill. I suspect there's been a staff turnover, and not for the better.

My PetSmart isn't bad as well. Good selection, good prices, good fish. My Petco isn't very good though.
