so i recently got a bulldog pleco and i was telling my mom how i got the most adorable fish and i was so excited for him.

so she came over last night and said let me this fish that's so cute.

i tempted him out with a bit of banana(the lights were still on so he was hiding) and she started laughing uncontrolably(my mother is not an aquarist)

when she finally caught her breath she tells me that norbert is the ugliest fish in the tank and only i could call something that monster-like cute and adorable.

i guess i'm like the mother of an ugly baby who see's the Gerber baby when she looks at her child.

i just thought you all might enjoy that story

I hear you. Every day I pass my betta in his tank and say "hi handsome"...my mom snorts with laughter and says he has a face only a mother could love.

I did. Thanks.

It's nice your mother asked to see him, anyway, no matter what she thought about his looks. I got some new fish on Friday - my husband was out of town at a curling bonspiel. He came back Monday afternoon. I waited and waited. Finally, late Monday evening, I asked, "Do you want to come see my new fish?" I think I'll have to start paying my family to come look at them.

Strange looking fish can be the most interesting to watch.

Then I would never see them, I hardly ever go into the livingroom. I just got a new fish room built in the basement, right next to my office, where I can see them as I spend most of my days down here. (Fish room only has 3 walls, the 4th has a sofa but is otherwise open.)

that sounds like a cool set-up i want to gaze at my tanks all day!
i have my bettas at work so i guess i'm content . . . for now.

as far as keeping my bull dog alive - i ran into trouble at first too, actually, while our fav forum AC was down- so there are a couple posts on the plantedtank.net about it

i have found out that they can be hard to aclimate it's imortant to pick one out that's not too big not too small and has a full belly and to keep food available to them a lot

this is how i aclimated norbert and he settled in beautifully and almost at once:

i added him and his pet shop water to a tubberware(i have for just this purpose be careful of dishsoap residue) i put the tupper ware in the tank wedged between the hood and the side of the tank

this is so that the temperature adjusts with out adding the pet shop water to my tank

every 2-5 minutes i'd add a little splash of my tank water to his bucket. after about an hour his bucket was full and i put him in my tank with a big piece of potato and banana ( my other fish love banana so they left his potato alone, i figured he shouldn't have to fight for food fisrt night in the tank)

i also waited to add him until i had a good carpet of algea over my lava rock and a little bit sprinkled on the driftwood because it can be hard to get them to convert to veggies and algae wafers-

i hope some of that helps you if you try again!
