a possible project

Had a very interesting day today!

After lunch this older couple brought their grandkids in to see the tanks and we got talking. Got on the subject of proper fish keeping and such, turned out that this guy had just retired from 35 years as the director of the province of saskatchewans sturgeon program and that he actually placed the 2 fish at the science center. Wow small world!!!

So I left my restaurant early to go rescape the tank for them. They moved it upstairs to the administration office. I took materials that would already have the beneficial bacteria on them.

Here are the pics of the tank redo.

For those of you who know about these fish, I have a ?

Do the noses turn up like that normally?

I spoke with jennifer about the need to add some current with a power head and to add some air flow to increase the movement of water from the bottom of the tank to the top.

The dept of fisheries is coming on friday to possibly take the fish for future release or to recommend a different direction such as the setting up of a more long term tank. I got a quote for her on a 7 foot long, 4 foot wide and 18 inch tall tank which would be drilled and have a chiller put on it.

edit:yes that is the hat I wore to work today as a chefs hat :P

:) I was going to ask about the hat. LOL! I wondered if that was your usual fish-keeping outfit. Hey, I wear a wetsuit, so maybe other people wear an eyeore hat!

Looking good in the tank. I get the feeling this is going to be a VERY interesting thread. I am so glad you posted it. I will be watching anxiously for updates!

Nice work Chef! I look forward to updates. :)

Regarding the hat I believe that adults should be able to get buzz lightyear runners that light up, we should be able to buy mr incredible shoes as well etccc.... I really think that adults need fun stuff like this to wear.

Thanks for all the positive feedback people. I strongly encouraged Jennifer to get these wonderful fish a proper diet. In the picture where I am holding the one I was studying its body and showing Jennifer how it is way skinnier that it should be. I was kind of saddened about how the fish went into immediate forage mode as the sand went in and yet I forgot to bring them some food for the rescape.

I did tell Jennifer that now that there was sand as a substrate the fish would be able to much more easily find the food and that it would not get lost in the gravel. I also told her that sturgeons unlike other fish have their taste buds on the outside of their mouth and that they needed diversity not only for health but also for enjoyment of life. I personally believe that fish do like to play and have a fun existence.

I tried to design the scape so that they had some structure to hide behind but also had an obstacle course to navigate and a nice enduro circle track they could swim laps around.

I am very curious as to how the thing goes on friday.

My main goal with this tank was to give the science center something they could be proud of with no uncertainty that it was the right place to have these fish, as well as having a tank that any person who has knowledge would be able to look at this tank and say yes that is how it should be.

so I got an email giving me an update of the visit from the ministry of environment visit.

I wont reveal the details of the email but will say I sent back a response telling them that I strongly disagree with what they told me. I did also get on the phone to the ministry of environment expressing my concern with what Jennifer from the science center sent me in her email. Within 5 minutes someone from the ministry of environment phoned me back and we had a discussion. I asked her if she wanted me to read my email I sent to jennifer and then thought heck I will send it to you. So I got her email and forwarded it to her.

HMMMMMM that makes me wonder since my email response is my email, I could share that with you guys !!!! I will take a day or two to see what I think, let me ask anyone want to see my response?

I will say this though. If a public attraction facility such as The Saskatchewan Science Center is going to have live animals and fish on display, the onus is on them to make sure that such displays are as good as they can be and provice top notch care for the animals within them. I may have opened a can of worms with getting involved with this, but, so be it.
