Hi, I was looking around at some books I have and websites trying to pick a "show piece fish" for my 30 gal. It currently has 5 black skirt tetra, 10 neon tetra and 4 bronze corys. I would like something non-aggressive, about 5-6 inches as an adult. Tank is fully planted and has pretty high lighting. Can anyone suggest a fish that would fit this profile? The tank also has 2 filters so it has a bit of a current in some spots, and some dead zones between with no current. Thanks for any suggestions.

A single fish? Or a school/shoal?

Its only a 30gal, so I would want a solo if possible, or a pair if they are more comforatable that way.

I think a gourami would be nice. Some varieties get to be the size you are looking at.

A pair of Dwarf Gouramis would look nice!

I have a Rainbow Cichlid who needs water conditions very similar to most other freshwater tropicals. He's in my 29g and is doing great. Very interesting, fun personality, changes colors depending on his mood, and is supposed to get to the size you're talking about.

Complicating matters at LPS

On lunch I dropped by my LPS and took a look at the stock. Those dwarf Gouramis are very pretty. There other Gourami stock was not so good except some that looked like Blue gourami, but were marbeled blue. Pretty also.

For the Cichlids they had some Jewel Cichlids that looked good, but as far as bang for the buck, they have a tank. This tank is labeled Misc. Cichlids.
They are 3 bucks a piece. They are all young, about 1" to 1 1/2" in size. There is a large mixture in that tank and being so young it is hard to tell what they are exactly. I imagine the white/grey ones with stripes up and down are convicts. A couple were orangeish. Some yellow. Some had a black stripe running from head to tail on there sides.

Anyone familiar with baby Cichlids that might point out a good bargin for what I am looking for. Watching them grow would be a bonus.

you might want to look up the fish on the internet or a good book.
many of the cichlids can get pretty big (tho many are also beautiful)

rams would be a good choice.
