For those of you losing sleep over my betta problems: Sleep easy once more! I have finally found a solution.
For those of you unfamiliar with my situation, a brief recap.
I live in a college dorm, so my fishkeeping opportunities are quite limited. I have 3 bettas, Ace, Gary, and Ned. Ace and Gary share a 2.5 gallon MiniBow that came with a clear plastic divider (with holes for water circulation). I thought this was a perfect way to keep two bettas until I realized that Ace & Gary were constantly attempting to attack each other through the plastic barrier, possibly causing increased stress or injuries from bumping into the divider.
I tried to obscure the divider with plants and decorations, but they pushed right through the plants. I looked into painting the barrier, but I was not confident that the paint would not leech into the water. Eventually I stuck a rectangular Tupperware lid next to the divider. Although this was somewhat effective, it was hideous.
Finally, I found the answer. I went to the craft section of Walmart. I bought two sheets of this black plastic material ($0.75) with square holes all over it. I think it is a type of canvass for yarn-based artwork and it comes in all colors. I cut the sheets to fit over the clear divider and attached them with twistie-ties. The holes let water circulate, and it does a great job of obscuring the vision of my fish. Once in a while they still see each other, but they are no longer obsessed with fighting!
