So, I read a little while ago on a DIY place that you can use organic potting soil for a planted fish tank. I went out and bought a couple of bags and did a test run in a vase with a plant trimming, but the soil wouldn't sink!

So basically the problem is that the soil won't stay down.
There is a small layer on the bottom of the vase and more soil just floating with water in between.
I will report on the soil in the morning.

Hi
have tried soil in several tanks the largest being a 150 with soil ranging from zero to 6 inches deep. Mostly in "beds"
two that I find satisfactory is Canadian peat and sifted top soil. "Black cow " worked fair but i suspect far too rich especially for smaller tanks.
It's a messy job but i find boiling a good way to get rid of floating matter You certainly don't want "potting soil!! They are full of floating organics. Have often used "coir" in pots topped with gravel for several tanks works well but does break down very rapidly but sure is hany to be able to move the plants around!! gary

With the right soil there is no need to cap. But forlooks you may want to.

I've got a soil tank that has no cap on it. Used top soil from a Big Box store and there is very little floating. Plants are doing great except for Cabomba but that's a light issue. Tank is outside on the porch and gets only natural light. Also have a "pond" out in the yard with soil. Cabomba is doing well there as are the rest of the plants. My 55 inside has soil "beds" but I did cap that one. I wanted a more "finished" look for that tank since it's in the house.
