add cory's for cycle

I have a 55 gal tank and have 6 giant danios, is this enough to do a fish in cycle? or should i put a couple of corys in it to? Lfs told me i should add a couple of them.

The thing with cories is other than they may be not a tough fishi to cycle with is the fact that you really shouldn't' have food debris on the bottom of the tank if you are cycling with fish you should feed minimum amount so therefore your cories may go hungry unless you drop in algae tabs and remain vigilant about taking out the uneaten parts before they go soft and dissolve.

Agreed, cories are longlived fish - they will go 10 years plus in a good environment. They are very sensitive to water parameters and IMHO, not at all suitable for cycling a tank. Stick with the danios, or return them and do a fishless cycle.

A good rule to follow is to add your bottom feeders last as you are stocking your tank. 6 Danios is a good number to cycle a 55 Gallon.

agree with the bottom feeders should be last. i wouldnt add anything until your fish tank is cycled.

Danios are about the toughest fish you can get, corys are not.
If you choose to cycle with fish I wouldn't use anything other than danios, because most fish aren't likely to survive or will have severe longterm damage, IMO.

thanks for the info i wont use any corys and just stick with the danios. I dont want to kill any fish. Thanks everyone

plus I disagree with the returning of your damaged fish once the cycle is over. I hate the idea that I could go to the LFS and buy someone else's damaged fish.

I hope nobody that believes in this policy lives and shops at my local store.
