Is there a trick to adding 02 to a shipping bag if you don't have access to an air pump? Is it ok to simply breath into the bag before tying it off? I do this when transporting fish over short distances but I know you do exhale more C02 than you inhale, so this may not be appropriate for shipping fish across the country?

O2 is added from a tank. You can put air in by holding the bag straight up, spreading it open and quickly grabbing the top of the bag, like they do in lfs'.

We breathe in about ~21.5% Oxygen and exhale about 16%. Prolly not ideal for fish bags.

I guess I should just practice that technique SubRosa mentioned. I saw someone do it once and it looked so easy. I try it at home and can't seem to master it.

I'm not good at that technique either, part of the reason I don't ship fish. Sometimes petsmart or co. will help you out with their O2, doesn't hurt to ask if it's close.

If you will be shipping fish more than once, get Kordon bags. If you don't do a lot of shipping, you can get smaller quantities reasonably on aquabid.com

With the Kordon bag you don't have any air/space in the bag at all. Put an appropriate amount of water in the bag, the fish and tie the bag to the level of water.

Also, with no air in the bag, the water doesn't slosh around either so movement and tossing of the box doesn't stress the fish out as much.

I was going to say the same thing. I worked at a lfs and we set up an air pump with a long piece of tubing attached. You just put tubing in bag, pinch, and wait for it to fill up. It kind of takes long though...
