Additional Filtration?

Ok I have a new question. From what I have read out here, most people have more than one filter on their tank. I currently have a 65-gallon tall hex tank with an AquaClear 300. This is going to be an angel tank once the cycle is complete for now there are just a few small zebra danios. Do I need additional filtration and if so what type of filter would you recommend?

Thank in advance for your response. Greg

My opinion is to get a canister too. But, get a Filstar xP-3. The xP-2 is smaller and rated for "up to" a 75 gallon, but with any filter, it's good to get more filtration than pushing the filter to the maximum recommendation.
Also, if/when you crave, and get that bigger tank, the xP-3 will be ready to take on that bigger tank you don't know you want yet.. Understand? :D

I have both the Fluval 404 and the Rena Filstar xP-3. The Filstar is a better canister in many ways...

The Eheim wet/dry is a great filter, but unless you have a heavily stocked/high bioload tank (not normal in a tank with angels), it would be overkill. I think another HOB would be fine (an AC 300 would be about right, if you're happy with yours) or a small canister filter set up as bio-only (i.e., prefiltered with a sponge and packed only with a biological medium like ceramic noodles). An Eheim 2213 would fit the bill nicely; they're reasonably priced, for an Eheim, and if you ran it as a bio-only filter, maintenance would be minimal.

I agree that second filter is needed, if for no other reason than to provide redundancy in case the first filter fails (e.g., doesn't restart after a power outage).

HTH,
Jim

I am thinking that my only real option is another canister. Being a Hex tank, a second HOB filter would have to be placed awkwardly on the side of the tank, which I do not think would look that great.

Don't forget that once you cycle the tank the way it is it will only have the bacteria capable of coping with a few small danios. If you stick a bunch more fish in the tank it will start to cycle all over again. The bacteria only develops to the level of food you provide it, and a few small danios in a 65 gallon tank isn't going to be a lot of food.

I highly recommend a canister filter. I used to have AquaClears and in fact still do. However, I've bought 2 Eheim canister filters within the last 2 years. I can't be more happy with them. I'm using the 2028 on my 55 gallon.
