i dont think my fish do either
i hate putting in gravel
so hard to clean

The background is styrofoam project board and blue poster board cut to size. about $4 total. I might replace it with another color if anyone has a better idea.

ddayton,

Hrm, that picture sucks. REALLY. All I did was chop and move a few things. I didn't even do what I wanted to do with 'cause my time is so limited this week. Hubby is in CA until Thursday and the kids . . . well, kids!

Anyhow, I didn't do it justice and if I get a few minutes later tonight or tomorrow, I'll give it another wack and add some different plants.

ur background looks fine but just from what i know alot of ppl use a solid black background because it creates ((SP?)) a sense of space that makes the tank seem bigger almost like it keeps goin back

Is that really a 20 gallon? What are the dimensions? It definitely looks bigger than that to me!

30"x12.5"x13"

20 gallon long

21 gallons if you wanna get technical

I agree with roan Put some dimension into it and backup the druftwood a bit.(which is probaly what I should do to my tank :D )

I think I would move those red colored objects that are in the back left corner...I bit more to the front. I'm not sure if they are plants or rocks, but I think moving them up a bit might add a little depth, especially with the log and rocks on the other side. I would also look for a different piece of driftwood, or add something more around it like shown on the redo that Roan did for you.

Other than that, it really doesn't look that bad. The suggestions to add differently shaped plants are good ideas...perhaps some of those water lily bulbs you find at walmart. If you can get some of the red colored one they would look very nice in that tank...too bad you can't tell the red from the greens from the packaging...lol...

Have fun with the redesign and can't wait for the pics !

Nice tank! I would make a few changes, nothing too drastic, but it will make a big impact...
1) remove the wood...Stuck out there and does nothing to balance the tank visually...

2) Bring the plants around to the sides of the tank a bit, forming more of a semi circle...You have the right idea on the right side of the tank, but it is a bit too high...Mirror that on the left side of the tank....

3) some sort of centre piece...You may want to experiment a bit, but i am leaning more towards a group of "centerpiece" fish then an actual object...

Whatever you select, must be bright, active and colourful to offset the neutral tank colours...
