Recently i purchased a "african betta". If i remember correctly the scientific name is Microtenopoma Ansorgi. I was wondering if anyone could give me some backround info on these guys. Thus far he/she has been very reclusive hiding behind some of the plants in my tank. My water was a little cool, but i recently purchased a heater, the temp is now around 80 degrees. Are these guys even related to bettas in any way? Are they reclusive in nature or will it eventually come out. My water parameters are perfect and my tank is understocked and heavily planted.

If you are speaking of the verticle orange striped ansorgii, they are anabantids as are bettas. They hide a lot and need very, yes very soft water. http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=Ctenopoma+ansorgii&spell=1 Probably an older name for the same fish.
