I don't see a forum or thread regarding African dwarf frogs so I guess I'll just start one. My question is this: I have a five-gal aquarium with three African dwarf frogs and a snail (not sure what kind but it is very pretty) These four tankmates have been fine together. The other day I added four of the tiny neon tetras because I understand they make good tank mates with the frogs. Well.....all four fish are now dead, one after the other they just died! I have no idea why! My pH is fine. Water temp is fine. Everything seems okay. The fish were beautiful and healthy. I'm wondering is it possible the frogs killed the fish? I didn't think they would do this as I've read that they do not kill fish, but usually the other way around, the fish might kill them. Then I saw on Ask.com someone said African dwarf frogs DO kill fish! The person said she actually witnessed the frog kill and eat the fish! He/she said they were not the clawed variety -- mine aren't either. I know the clawed ones can be aggressive. What do you think??

My ADF gets in fights with my Betta sometimes. Never does any damage, but that doesnt stop her from fighting for the food.

Another thing to consider is that neon tetras are not the easiest to care for. ADF's generally tend to be messy and neons need clean water. Is your tank filtered? How often do you change the water? What is the lighting like? (neons are blackwater fish) How did you acclimate the neons (plop and drop, bag float, drip acclimation)?

Your tank is a five gallon tank. With three frogs and a snail, it is filled to capacity. When you added the neons, the water quality probably went down, and the neons died. Neons are a very touchy fish and do not do well in poor water quality. You said the PH was fine. But, did you test for ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate? Adding that many fish at once to a five gallon would surely cause an ammonia spike, and neons don't like that. It is very rare for an ADF to go after and kill a fish. They might eat an already dead fish. They might be able to go after an already dying fish and catch it, but for the most part, they leave the fish alone, and it is the fish hurting the frog you need to watch out for. Also, the fish will eat all the frogs food before the frog gets any if you aren't careful. So, I would say it is not likely that the frogs killed the neons.

I too agree with the above. A 5gal is a little to small for all that. You were probably at max with just the 3 frogs anyway, The neons probably dies for other reasons though== Stress from moving, sudden change in water, weak stock, ect.

Agreed. As mentioned ADFs will stand their ground when food is involved, but since they have no tongues or teeth it's mainly by posturing and trying to "scare" away the fish.

Thank you for the feedback. I agree, the tetras probably died because of the water quality. :yuck: And the tank is too small. The frogs are doing very well, by the way!
