.my girlfriend have forced me to convert my freshwater setup to an african tank how should i go about this.what are some good cheap rock.i have 2 bag of home dep[ot pea gravel in my 75 should i keep it i dont think it would give good color contrasts to the almost neon bright fricans i have whats a better substrate.what kind of rock should i use for the hiding places

I'm using pea gravel in my 150G african tank and it works great. For rocks I've just used rocks I found. Cleaned them up really well with a wire brush and some water.

Otherwise, most people seem to use slate for their rock formations. It's very flat and easy to stack stabily. Just one hint no matter what you use for rocks. You should place the rocks either directly on the tank bottom, or on styrofoam on the tank bottom (if you don't want to scratch it or put any pressure points on the glass). Don't put them on top of the gravel as a "larger" rock formation could have a tendency to be unstable. After you've got everything where you want it, add the gravel to fill it all in.

I like crushed coral as a substrate, although in my african tanks you don't see much substrate as the tanks are heavily rocked and the substrate occupies the interstitial spaces.

I also use just about any kind of rock, but I like rocks that mimic the Rift lakes best; granite and other angular, irregularly shaped rocks are what I prefer.

I always line the tank bottom before adding rocks (I've been using Lexan lately with good luck) to protect against rockfalls, and I always add the substrate AFTER stacking rocks to guard against undermining caused by digging.

Jim
