agressive fish

Huh? Dwarf Gouramis maybe... Ever seen aa adult Gold Gourami go on a rampage?

Yes... mine! I was told by the LFS that the Gourami was a completely peaceful fish. Well, I bought a gold one that is about 3 inches or so and added him to the community with my Angels. He hid himself for a few days, but now he is most definitely boss of the entire upper realm and will drive everyone away from his area. He really gets mean at feeding time! I've contemplated taking him out and putting him in my other tank with my Silver Dollars.

If you are looking for a semi agro fish, that stays small, golden wonder killifish are really cool. My brother got me one thinking it would be ok with my 10 guppies, 2 days later, I had no guppies left. I now have 4 of them, call em my dwarf arrowanas :p:

lol i cant blame him lol. wouldnt you if a bunch of people were constantly chasing eachother

Not to mention the nose down shimmy dance, the sideways shimmy dance, the twirling around and around dance, and all the other odd mannerisms they seem to have. Some times I really do think they are mental.

Thankfully they only get that way with eachother. 8 seemed to be the magic number of tiger barbs for me.

I have a blue ram that is pure mean--he and my dwarf gourami are in a battle royale over prime food getting territory in the tank. They are fine most of the time, but when the food comes out they both will take prime lunges at each other.

I think most fish can turn agressive in certain situations--like mating or when presented with smaller yummy looking fish.

that is true, but for the most part, many gouramis are categorized as peaceful as are bala sharks, that's not to say there aren't crazy mean ones out there but that goes for any species

By who? Other than the LFS people trying to sell them to unsuspecting noobs to put in a ten gallon tank with a common plec, a coule of Tinfoil Barbs, and maybe a Pacu...

When they are very young, Gouramis can be considered peaceful, but this is a temporary situation. It does last beyond the satisfaction guarantee of the store though, and that's all they care about. As they mature, Gouramis become territorial and aggressive. Even the Dwarf Gourami can be a problem, though it isn't that common.

Bala Sharks are said to be peaceful and good tankmates, of course it needs to be a rather large tank as they prefer to kept in groups and can reach 16" as adults. Even the most peaceful fish, when this size, will snack on smaller fish.

If a fish is peaceful when it's young, but gets territorial and aggressive as an adult, that fish cannot reasonably be classified as peaceful. It isn't going to stay that way, and that's what matters. Just like we don't stock tanks based on current fish size, but rather based on the size they can be expected to grow to, neither can we select fish based on temperament as juveniles if that behavior is not common in the the species as an adult.

When it comes to behavior there is a vast gap between Gouramis and Dwarf Gouramis.

I have a Paradise Fish in a semi-aggressive community tank. He will get an attitude every now and then, color up, and give the other fish a dirty look

when my paradise fish does that, he goes absolutely skitz, darting around the whole, tank, then he goes back to his normal residence by the birthing net. but i have to say, that when the colour comes through on the paradise fish, it is one of the most beautiful looking fish that i have come aross.

GAHH! TIGER BARBS CAN BE AGRESSIVE... BUT I HAVE LARGER BARBS.. IM HONESTLY NOT SURE WHAT KIND THEY ARE. THERE LIKE AN INCH AND A HALF LONG.. AND THEY JUST STARTED FIGHTING TODAY. TOTAL DOMINATION.. AND I SEPARATED THEM AND ONE ENDED UP DYING.

SO BE CAREFUL WITH BARBS.. THERE FIN NIPPERS
