Are these things really necessary? Im getting tired of bubbles bursting everywhere. In an open top aquarium with a power filter, is there enough gas exchange?

Air pumps aren't necessary, I don't hae one in my 10 gallon. There should be enough oxygen, but if you see your fish gasping at the surface you may want to put it back in.

an air pump should not make the difference in gettign enough oxygen. and there are other things that can cause gasping at the surface. by no means are they necessary. what size tank? what type of filter exactly? what fish (types and sizes) do you have?

the tank is a 20H. the filter is a whisper 20. the top is open. there are live plants, 5 white clouds, 2 1.5-2.5" cichlids, and a pleco that is about 1.5"

No, You will have plenty of gas exchange with a HOB power filter. The bubles are useless unless you like the way it looks. I think it looks unaturall and have never understood why people insist on using them. I guess thats just how some people like there tanks that way with pink gravel and sponge bob oraments.

No, air pumps are not necessary. Modern filters provide plenty of circulation if properly sized and maintained. Bubbles are considered ornamental by many, and styole of decor is a personal choice, not a functional requirement..

i have NEVER used an air pump and air stone, and i have been keeping bettas for about 15 years. i think back in the 70's and 80's there was some kind of myth perpetuated that air stones were required to maintain a healthy tank and that the water couldn't hold onto oxygen if you didn't use them. i've also heard people talk about them as if they were filters in their own right. like someone with a tiny tank with a betta when asked if they have a filter they say "I have a bubble wall!" like that counts or something.......

air pumps = junk, if you want to make sure your getting plenty of 02 and some good water movement, stick a powerhead under there, i personnaly have a powerhead in every tank that i have just to keep the dead spots moving.

Yea I've heard they are useless most of the time, but I have 2 reasons for using one:

1.) I'm slightly over-stocked, so I want to make sure there is plenty of air in the tank.

2.) My cory's LOVE the airstone. They'll go to it, ride the bubbles up, rinse and repeat =p

If your fish like the bubbles that's a good reason to keep them there. I personally hate bubbles bacause they maintain my hood wet because of the splashing.
