Air Pumps

Depends. What filtration are you using? How is the water returned from said filtration? How many fish? What size fish?

An air pump isn't inherently necessary in any tank, but might become so under certain circumstances.

Are airpumps absolutely necessary in any tank? Especially if you've got live plants in there, it shouldn't be required if the filter is returning the water with any surface disturbance at all, would it? I run an AquaClear 200, and it doesn't disturb the water much at all; the ripple doesn't even reach the other side of my 38-gal tank. Don't seem to need an airstone.

Just as an aside: This is another time when doing that "Tank Specs" post would really help. So many posts I've seen lately can't be addressed without some kind of additional information on the tank. If the tank-spec links were there in the poster's signature (as suggested by the new, first post on the board), it would save time and effort because the question could be answered right away, after viewing the tank specs involved. We should do that, you guys!

My loaches "surf" the bubble wall. They'll hang upside down like they're swimming against the current...Pretty fun to watch.....They also like just hanging out next to the bubbles....Must be like a jacuzzi...;-) hehe

You have enough filtration in your 55 gallon. An Air Pump isnt required, unless you want to hook it up to an ornement, if you know what I mean. Or if you like the way it looks go ahead and throw an air pump in.

But you dont want to much current, you dont want your fish whirling around in your tank ;)

Live Plants?

Do not use an air pump (for bubbles) with live plants. The bubbles "get rid" of CO2 the plants need. Especially with CO2 injection, you do not want the CO2 to vent off..
