Depends, what cichlids? What filtration in what size tank? I think a second filter is more useful than just an airstone in most tanks, maybe not fry tanks. Even then, a sponge over the intakes works similarly with better results & easier filter cleaning. You can alternate cleanings with less disruption to beneficial bacteria. Fry can graze on the prefilters just as they would on a sponge filter.

depends if you are low on oxygen in the water, or you just simply like the look of them,


if it's not a planted aqyarium, then chances are it wo't really be a bad thing outside the noise of the pump

My opinion is no, unless your wants/needs are as suggested above.

I would rather use those resources to "power" a filter. That way you've got bubbles, filtration and eventually a nice portable source of beneficial bacteria.
