all their fins have rotted away but there are no physical signs of distress or white fuzzy pimply spots either. 2 out of 3 cats have no top or side fins, the tail is fine & they are good eaters so are very fat cats. the 3rd cat has most his finnage but don't know why he is doing better than his bigger friends. my other fish have no signs of tail rot - 4 silver dollars, a medium & a baby tri-color bala sharks, 2 fat blood fins, 1 beta & 1 pleco. anyone know why & also give me advice on how to cure them? thx all.

You sure there not being eaten off? The only time I have seen fin rot like that is in young cories were the water was bad. They lost there fins but otherwise recovered due to bacteria. They were at another breeders house in his community tank.

frequent water changes will definitely help.

Eaten off? not sure who would eat off their side fins, 'cept maybe the pleco.

How are their barbels? that's often the first thing to go.
If not sure if it's bacterial or fungal...I'd alternate triple sulfa and an antibiotic like erythromycin to take care of either...don't 'chemo' the tank with both.

Mela-and Pimafix together are OK tho.

thx, will try the meds out.

a quick question what substrate, I never really have raised these fish but the one or two that I did try experienced the same thing and I was told by someone that it might be the substrate, rough substrate causes them to catch their barbles is what they told me in turn stressing them out due to the pain and then because of stress the fins disintigrate. seemed plausible to me yet one other ? I had in my thoughts were are my fish getting enough food since my other fish were food hogs

but like I said not really a fish I have great experience with

Yea rough gravel will do a number on there barbels but have never seen it take off fins. I had some 2 month old babies with 2 week old swordtails that started pounding them to death on the 3rd or 4th day and they were 1/4 the cats size. I dont put it past any fish to be a fin nipper including plecos.

OMG some plecos are bad. I had a common pleco who loved the slimecoats of fish. He even ate the bottom fins on one of my fancy goldies! :mad2: Gotta be careful what you house with what, what might be ok 95% of the time doesn't cover the other 5%.

Thx everyone for your feedback. Rough substrate not the prob - I barely have any gravel - a lot of bare spots. As for the pleco being a fin eater?? I can't believe this - 1st off they have those suckers, 2nd off the cats don't stay in one spot for more than a few seconds so would be impossible for the pleco to suck/nip off the top & side fins, 3rd my pleco is more passive & docile, not very active. I think I need to do more frequent water chg & try some meds. I did have an albino shark (since passed) which could have been a suspect...
