Have a 10" Albino in 55 gal tank. Lately we have noticed some darkening. Fins, especially pectoral, and a few spots of various sizes, mostly small, on body. Othewise healthy. (About 10 days ago he made a bid for freedom, smashed through loose cover and made it to floor, had what appeared to be a small bruise on forehead after that) All levels tes in normal range and temp is 76 degrees.

Has anyone else seen this before, darkening of an albino?.

dont quote me on this but i believe u have what they call a lutino oscar which are predominantly white with dark finnage and some other color variations. i have a mostly white oscar with dark edged fins and a little orange mixed in throughout his body and from what i have researched its a lutino not a true albino.

I had an oscar like that as well from what I found also it was called lutino. The fins on mine would get lighter when he was stressed, which was when something harrased him or I did a water change. Otherwise he was white with orange, with a nice dark black fin lining.

Hmmmmm. Lutino? He is white with orange and when we first got him he was about 4" and no darker coloration. Doing some reading and thought it might be ammonia burn but ammonia is only about .5PPM, it's been much higher before when we were on vacation and friend overfed, and like I said I don't think this darker color was there recently before, but not positive. Could the color have changed, (normal?), with time? Or be changing?
The Albino, Opie, doesn't seem to mind the light at all but we still ony use it occasionally), Spot is a Tiger Oscar in 75 gal and he gets very dark when stressed by light, tank cleaning etc. you know: lays on the bottom of the tank on his side and is really still. His mom thinks he is going to die everytime and I just finally cut the cord on the light so that all he has is ambient light. So I do know they can change color. But this is constant and almost looks like mold, (I know it's not mold). Doesn't seem to be a growth though.
Thanks, Opie's dad
Added: Ur right he is a lutino. :D
