Aloha A Newbie From Maui

definitely go with the 20 long. lots of stocking options for a small tank. i traded my 10g in for one and i love it

:welcome:if you want a cichlid maybe you could try an angel.
i dont think so. it would work for awhile but the angel would eventually outgrow it, as they grow up to i 5" (may be more) but the main thing is that they get tall. so not only do they need a bigger tank in terms of length but also in terms of height. 30g is a good size for a lone angel or a pair.

Thanks everyone i will look into 20 longs i just have one question will i need a heater for my tank my house stays in the low 70s to high 80s so will i need one for my fish ?

I'm in Honolulu, and with no heater my tanks stay at a very consistent 82 from April to October. From November to March, they fluctuate in the low to mid-70's. In my 55, I do not run a heater, because all my fish in there actually prefer the cooler water. But now that I have a 20 gallon with a betta, I will get it a heater for the winter, because its water needs to stay around 80.
The responsible thing to do (even though I don't do it in the 55 :nono:) would be to buy a heater and leave it set to the temp which is best suited for your fish. The heater will only start running if the temp falls below what it's set at, so it may never come on if your tanks stay warm on their own, but it's there as a safety precaution. You want to avoid big temperature fluctuations, and the heater can help prevent that.
