Alternative sponge media for your filter basket

We all know that filling those media baskets can be tricky if you don't want your filter to get clogged too quickly restricting flow, this due to the relatively small footprint most basket filters have usually only 8"x5" or 40" square inches in a vertical column of water flow. When you consider your other baskets have to share this same footprint space behined one another its not hard to see why media selection and placement is important. The selection of media is pretty much limited to loose porous materials good for bio filtering but poor in mechanical and polishing ability unless you install a restrictive polishing pad and don't mind cleaning your filter out every week, personally I insist on a filter that can sustain flow for at least 1 to 2 months.

I own 2 Fluval 404's and have set them up with at least 1 basket that does excellent mechanical and good polishing while still allowing water to free flow without restriction buy using my old AC sponges and cutting them up into 1/4" to 1/2" irregular size squares and rectangles to create a rip-rap filter media which confronts water flow for good sponge filtering, while the gaps between the rip-rap sponge still allows the flow of water without clogging the filter for much longer then a solid block of sponge or micron.

So before tossing out that old sponge, rise it out one more time and make some sponge rip-rap media:thumbsup:

I've done that with my HOT Magnum before.

I just did this today off my own back without looking at this thread. I'm feeling rather smug and clever now...haha! Have yet to see if it works though, I did a bit of a botch job on an improvised filter...

Cool idea!

Hey Gunner canister pre-filter helpful or not ?

I found this EHEIM PRE FILTER might be a idea to use on other canisters as well? 12.99 on PETSMART website.

Traps particles of coarse dirt already in the suction area. Prevents the filter media in the canister from becoming contaminated too quickly. Increases the biological process of decomposition in the external filter and a longer service-life.

Features:

Traps coarse particles before they reach the filter, thus increase service life
Use in aquarium where large debris is present, especially when feeding live or frozen foods
High waste producing fish (Eg. Lou Han, Goldfish)

I think Im going to look making or buying power head internal foam filters sleeves. Might as well make my power heads do double duty, cant be much uglier then the AC strainer I have on them now (4). Maybe Ill do the same for my intakes.

Oh Rod! You got me off topic I though we were on the Hydro sponge filter thread LOL.

I have been using prefilter sleeves on my shrimp tanks for a few years now. It works great on the low gph filters but on my higher gph filters the foam needs to be cleaned way too often to maintain flow, I have heard of good things about the Ehiem pre filter that it dosent clog so quickly but I really can't stand Ehiem green tubing! Love the cans hate the green tubing LOL.
