Alternative to Java moss?

What about hornwort? Makes great fry cover, isn't demanding, and even looks nice!

Ya, the java moss in my tank tends to be everywhere and on everything. But I wouldn't say it's strangling anything though.

hornwort will take over a tank, you will be trimming it daily. it does look nice tghough imo and is a great nutrient absorber

Hornwort made my aquarium water a yellowish-green colour, and also made the water smell like algae. I'll never use that stuff in my tanks again.

Riccia is easy to control if it's just left floating in a flattened ball on the surface.

Other plants my shrimp like to hang out in..

Moss balls
Dwarf hairgrass
Cabomba, if you have it bushy enough

Can Java moss be tied down to rocks or bogwood?
yep. and it probably should ;)

interesting note on the hornwort about the smelliness. I've been noticing it lately in my tank, but I attributed it to the java moss, which had a real algae kind of smell when i was attaching it to the piece of driftwood in my tank. now I'm not sure where it's coming from, but it's rarely noticeable except when I'm getting set to do my weekly water change.

shrimps do great with glosso carpet and HC carpets. i guess the little babies can hide underneath the plants.. hard to make the carpet if you dont have co2 and high light tho..
you could get riccia and use it as ground cover by putting stainless nets over them to prevent them from floating.

I keep water lettuce and najas grass in my shrimp tank. The shrimp are always climbing around the roots of the water lettuce. The Najas grass will definately take over your tank though. It grows a lot faster than any java moss I've ever seen.
