Am I OK on filtration; REALLY? (90 Gallon)

Thank you both for the advice; I suppose it couldn't hurt to throw in a canister at this point? I've just ordered 3 x more powerful powerheads (along with a timer) and still have the Emperors on the way. Would a Fluval 405 hurt? And if not what sort of media should I avoid at all costs, or conversely - definitely have! :)

We're both very excited about this! (my wife mamasky is a user on the forum also)

If you decide to go down the route of having a canister filter with media on the tank, the media they use is floss...usually black and white which are different filtering strengths..and maybe a bag of activated carbon..

The main thing about using a canister filter is to make sure that you keep filter floss's clean, rigorously, as part of your maintenance routine..

Rigorously as in each water change? Monthly? I am loving all of this advice, by the way.. I can't wait to set this thing up!! It will be so colourful and awesome; our 12 nano was fun, but the lighting is SO wimpy and the space so limited!

Thanks,
Az

P.S. So filtering overkill is not a fear? This would add another 325gph flow and a lot of forced mechanical/chemical filtering! (I am not dumb, just inexperienced.. lol)

I would do it at every water change. Basically, when you do a water change, take out the filter floss and wash it in only the tank water, not fresh, as this will keep the good bacteria in the media.

More flow is always going to better for corals, but, be carefull that you dont have too much flow as some fish and inverts will not like a fast flowing tank and there are also some low flow corals..

Well as it stands I am looking at 1685gph (18.7x turnover per hour) not including the skimmer.. so adding an additional 325gph to hit 22.3x turnover per hour should not harm anything, right? especially if I place less... turbulent-friendly species in places designed to have lower flow in the 90 gallon tank?

Going with less powerful individual sources gives me more control, I think, than having 1000gph sources, etc.. at least it seems so in my mind!

Our current plans call for things like gold/yellow, button, and star polyps.. zoos.. mushrooms.. and fish like six-line wrasse, rainford goby, firefish, mandarins, and a lone yellow chromis. Not to mention cleanup crew like nassarius, turbos, skunks, etc.

Again man, thank you kindly for all of your time. I hope to be as useful as you some day around here!

fluvals dont use floss they have everything built in with media trays. there are sponges and then 4 media trays in a 405 i use renew, carbon, chemi pure, and phospure in the canister with a combination of live rock and clay cubes.
phospure has to be changed when the phosphates rise. carbon and renew need to be changed monthly as well as the sponges rinsed and the chemipure rinsed but the chemipure lasts bout 5-6 months and u dont touch the live rock.

Sorry to be dense, but it sounds like you have more medias than trays!

1. Renew
2. Carbon (Is that not redundant? I thought renew was a... "better" carbon?)
3. ChemiPure
4. Phosphate Remover
5. Live Rock/Clay Cubes

How do you have it arranged top try to bottom? Should I steer clear of the BioMax material they sell?

Thanks Germanman!

Haha, ok - that makes more sense now! Does the order matter overmuch? I assume the tray containing the clay cubes and liverock is hit last!

Thx
