Am I Treating Ich Right?

Time to chill on this one.

Remember, attack the issue and not the person.

If you have been in fishkeeping for any length of time, the standered was to use Non iodized salt as well as keep a little bit of salt in the aquarium at all times. It is old school of thought but it was the practice.

Now, if you want to debate this in a well to do, constructive manner you will all prove your own statements on the subject without attacking the other posters.

Well, thanks for all your help everybody, and i didn't mean to start this thread so it would turn into a ****fight, i just wanted some advice... not that it matters now anyway, both fish that were affected are gone :( Just got rid of the 2nd one then, even though he was still alive (BARELY) as he was barely able to do anything other than breathe, he had big patches on his body where there were no scales (no thanks to my platy and swordtail attacking him) and he had big red sores everywhere (like gills/fins etc) so i thought it would be best to put him out of his misery

I'm all sad now :(

This discussion has been very interesting, but have we missed the whole point. Two feeder comets have ich. Salt was added and the temperature raised to 85 degrees. One comet died and another is on the way. So far the discussion has been an argument on how salt works.

How about 85 degrees for goldfish?

Excellent point, Jules! What's the use of "speeding up the life-cycle" of Ich, to rush the treatment, if we are lowering the resistance of the host fish through heat stress? Some fish are fine at 88oF: Discus, Apistos. Others croak for lack of oxygen: increase aeration. And adjust all your treatments to the fish at hand.

Excellent, Jules!

Richer - just let my irritation get the better of me. Apologies.

What have i done wrong? The 2 comets died, and i've been using the 2 tablespoons of salt in the water, with 86 degree temperatures, i thought this would have killed the ich? Apparently not, 'coz this morning i noticed that my Swordtail now has it too :(

If i use chemicals, will i have to take the filter material out? or will the bacteria be ok? (i'm into the nitrite stage of the cycle now)
