I went to the LFS because I noticed on their stocking list on the web they had gotten in some Amano shrimp. I had been asking about them, so I wanted to go grab them. When I got there they said they had sold them all, but they had some red cherry shrimp and some rainbow shrimp. Well, I already have cherry, so I thought I would look at the rainbow. Then I looked and saw these 5 huge shrimp. They looked like amano's to me, but the guy said he didn't know if they were the rainbow or the amano. So I grabbed them anyway. I have never seen amano shrimp in person, just on the net, but that's what they looked like to me. The thing is though. These shrimp are freaking huge! I didn't think amano's got that big. I'll post some pics up in a few. They sort of have a green tint to them, but they have the markings like I've seen of amanos in the pics on the net. They make my cherry shrimp look like tiny little babies or something. Anyways I got on the net, but couldn't find out much on rainbow shrimp. So, I'll let you guys and gals be the judge when I get the pics up.

Ok, here are some pics. They suck, but hopefully it will be enough for someone to tell.

Note that these shrimp are 3 times as big as my cherries and they also have a white or tan stripe going down there back.

Thanks. I did some looking around at pics on the net and do agree that they are amanos. I just can't believe how big they are. I didn't realize they were so big compared to cherry shrimp.

Judging by the White Cloud in one of the pics, they get bigger, up to about 3 inches IME. I just bought 4 more of them today.

Wow! I guess it's a good thing I only got 5 of them then. They're pretty fun to watch zipping through the water and when they get some food, it's over. They won't let go of it for nothing.

I agree that, from the pictures you've posted, they appear to be Amano shrimp.

I've kept Amano shrimp, a.k.a. Caridina multidentata (which used to be Caridina japonica), off an on for many years now. It is true that they grow larger than most 'dwarf' shrimp species, such as Neocaridina denticulata (Red Cherry), or Caridina sp. (Crystal Red). However, I have never seen an Amano shrimp larger than two inches long.

I do keep shrimp that grow rather large, but they are all Macrobrachium species.

I just put them in last night and 2 of them molted already. Is that a good or bad thing for them to molt that quick after being added?
