When it gets too big post it for sale. I've seen many people looking for bigger ones for bigger tanks and they don't want to take the time to grow it, so there you are to supply the demand. They ship quite easily in a surprisingly small box; just fold the upper portion of the leaves over and tuck it in a ziplock, box and mail. Then get a new little one and grow it out. Lather rinse repeat.
They are very pretty and grow slowly enough you can get a year or so out of each one. Therefore this would be an excellent time of year to start on your first.
1) They have lots of roots, so need about 3 inches of gravel or sand==too much for a 10gal
2) Once it hits the surface the leaves will wilt and dry.
3) You can try E. Tenellus. It is a dwarf sword that only grow about 3".
