I have had my Amzon Sword for over a year now in a 10 gallon tank. It is doing very well. I generally clip a couple of leaves off every so often to keep it from taking over. Lately I didn't do that and now it has thrown up a stem to the surface and that stem has begun to sprout a new plant with leaves and a roots. What shoudl I do, clip it off or leave it? Does this mean the main plant will die soon?

I don't know what you're "suppose" to do, but mine did the same thing. I clipped the shoot near the base of the main plant, then close to each plantlet and planted them. I did wait for the roots of the small plantlets to get about 1 1/2" before cutting it from the main plant. None have died, it's been a month.

You can leave them until they fall off on their own (which they will eventually do) or you can pull them off gently when they look like they have a substantial root system, as beviking did.

I had to remove my amazon sword from my 55g because it got too big.

Thanks. I realize it can get a bit on the big side for a 10 gallon tank but that I why I generally clip it. My ten is home to mostly java fern and the sword, so very broad leafed. It looks kind of cool right now so I think I will leave it for bit.

I had an amazon sword in my 45H and it completely took over. The root system was freakin' gigantic when I pulled it out. It's amazing it hasn't grown out of your 10g and taken over the living room. I won't own one again unless I have a 120+ gallon tank which isn't likely.

Well it is in a cold water tank so I am sure that limits its growth. And as I said I do trim off a lot of its leaves so it dopesn't get a chance to take over. I know the root system is large but the other plants are just java moss and ferns so I am not concerned about rooting.
