American and south african cichlids

I highly reccomend against doing that. Outside of the usual reasons(water quality, diff continents, etc., etc) the JD is far to aggressive. I know africans are by no means nice-tempered fish, but with a JD's potential size, appetite, attitude, and lack of respect for getting their fins nipped, I'm almost certain(99.9%), this would not turn out so well.

Acyually, I'd be more concerned the JD may get trashed by the Africans, depends on the species though. No matter how you look at it, it's not a good mix though.

Malawi cichlids are better kept with malawi cichlids. they are active and aggressive and what means one thing to a malawi could mean something totally different to a dempsy. Also (if we are refferng to mbuna) they have totally different food requirments. Too much protien could kill them while the JD needs a more meaty diet.

Yep I agree with all that. Primarily Diet and social habits are the concerns. The JD Diet is really bad for the Malawis. You manage Malawi aggression by overstocking - which they seem to get. You can't manage SA/CA aggression in the same way. I thiknk the JD would go nuts and take on the Malawis, who would be likely favourites to trash him.

I had a friend tell me her one "african" cichlid killed all the other africans in the tank... the "afridan" was a Jack Dempsey.. moral of the story... probably not a good idea

LOL depending on the JD and the africans that could certainly also happen.

I'm fairly convinced the CA/SA cichlids just can't cope with the over-stocking of your typical Malawi tank and will just freak out and either kill everything if they are strong enough or get trashed. They just don't have the same ability to 'read' the malawis as the malawis have, and their processes are wired completely differently as regards social interaction.
