I have a new 38 gallon tank that I have setup with coral/gravel substrate, lots of rocks, three plants and several snails. I have around a 7.5pH.

I wanted to get some mbuna cichlids...but my husband is trying to steer me towards the american/new world cichilds.

So, what and how many would you recommend for this size tank and setup?

We've looked at some websites and like convicts, firemouths, blue rams, bolivian rams, and green terrors. Would cory cats mix well with there guys or what about red-tailed sharks?

Does anyone have some good suggestions on what species get along well with each other? I'm kinda interested in breeding but don't think our community tank with be large enough.

How many of each should I get and does anyone know a good online source for buying fish? My LFS doesn't have much of a selection.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

mbuma cichlids would not be a good choice. A green terror would get too big. You could do a pair or convicts or a pair of firemouths. Firemouths can be very agressive to very docile and may or may not work depending on their attitude. Beware with a pair of cons as they are in the catagory of just add water to spawn. Ram cichlids would also be a good choice and would be the only cichlids listed that you could keep corys with. A nice pair of German blue rams and a school of 6 corys would be ok. A trio of rams would be ok with the corys if they are of the same sex. You could also do a pair of apistos of pretty much any kind along with the corys. Red tailed sharks woud also work with corys or the dwafr cichlids such as rams or apistos.

akapaul26....thanks for your suggestions, I've already looked at liveaquaria.com and will probably order a couple from them

Thanks again!

for a 'hardier' species of ram..nbot quite as colorful but they do color up ..
look at Altispinosa(bolivian ) rams

they are slightly larger than blues and not near as delicate.
