So I picked up a bottle of clear ammonia and shook it all up. Good, no foam. Then I read the back label: Contains ammonia and surficants. The filter I'm using has fresh, activated carbon. Will that remove the surficants anyway? And what affect, exactly, do surficants have on fish anyway?

I did the same thing, except I wasn't smart enough to read the label BEFORE putting the stuff in the tank. Fortunately, I was doing a fishless cycle so no fish were harmed, but it was a royal pain to have to tear everything down and start over.

Thanks for the tips, guys. After reading them, I went to my local "Ace" Hardware store and picked up a bottle of ammonia (contains 10% ammonium hydroxide). And nothing else was listed. I noticed people had suggested Ace's ammonia on other posts and sites.
Oh, it was clear and didn't foam when I shook it.

Same thing that I am using. I have well over 3 quarts left from the gallon I bought over a year ago. I have cycled about 10 tanks using that bottle but most were filter clones so they went fairly fast.
