So what's the difference between Nessler reagant tests and salicylate? I remember reading that one type is affected by tap water conditioners or something. How do you tell the difference, with the number of reagants?

How 'bout the API ammonia test? Is it only 1 reagant, or am I wrong?

Also, are there any liquid tests that read only toxic NH3? Daveedka told me that there were some, but I can't find any. I have the Seachem Ammonia Alert stick-on, which only reads toxic ammonia, but it's not very precise. It does give a ballpark, though.

Alright, got some more info. This is taken from a post at dwarfpuffers.com (http://dwarfpuffers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4317&start=30)

"Nessler based kits read both NH3 and NH4, salicylate kits read only the NH3.
Hach, LaMotte and Seachem's kits are all salicylate based kits, although expensive compared to Nessler kits. Invaluable if you are treating for chloramines or detoxing after an ammonia spike with Prime or another NH3 neutralizer."

I guess the Seachem Ammonia Alert must be running a salicylate-based reaction with NH3, then.
