Hi. I am new to the board and I have to say I love reading posts on here. Everyone is so knowledgeable and nice :)

I have a 20 gallon tall aquarium that developed a leak. My husband doesn't want to go to the trouble of resealing it - he thinks I should just buy another tank. Well I was thinking if I get another 20 gallon I would rather have a long instead of a tall. My stand is 25'' long and is the kind that just supports the sides. I know a 20 long is 30'' across so I was wondering if I could attach a 31'' board across the top of the stand so I could get the longer tank. Would that hold the weight of the tank ok with the 2.5'' overhang on either side of the board?

Obviously I am not a carpenter or anything so when I say board I guess I would like ideas on how thick a board I would need to make it work.

Also I guess I should mention - you don't need to worry about our fish - we had just bought a 55g right before I noticed the leak so talk about fortitious :) because we had just moved our fish over earlier that day.

Thanks!

3/4" plywood w/trimmed edges and corbels under the plywood ends for support would work.

If it were me, I'd spend the extra money and get the correct stand if you can. It'll cut down on the risk factor of potential woes down the road.

I agree with Slappy, not a problem with a piece of 3/4" plywood...not even sure if I would add the corbels for the support to the overhanging edges.

Yeah, but they'd sure dress it up, Bob. ;)

Thank you all so much. I told my husband what you recommended and he said he can do that for me no problem :). Now I just need to wait patiently while he gets around to it, lol.

i agree with this. but then when hubby is gone to work i would fix the tank up myself, and have 2. :)
