I started up a newly planted tank a week ago. My red Wendti Crypt has new growth, as does my Amazon Sword. Hornwort and Java moss look fine.
The dwarf spiral val looks a little light, and I think it doens't like being battered by my spray bar, so I think I need to move it.
The java fern doesn't seem to have changed much, neither does the anubias The worst is the anacharis...it looks almost transparent, and the ends taht I stuck in the ground are pulling up.
I have a 55 gal tank with a total of 80 watts light, no co2 and a substrate of flourite and sand, I put flourish pellet ferts in when I planted, and am dosing with Flourish Excel and Florish. WHat's missing?
I have 4 rather smalish peices of driftwood, one of which has some black fuzz on it (see other thread) but am wondering why the anacharis is looking transparent? It had grown, but isn't looking too happy now. KH, GH and PH all high, no nitirites and trace of nitrates.

I'd say light could be the issue. In my 66g anacharis grows leggy with tiny leaves. In my 25g where the light is lower, and more intense, it is green and bushy. Overfertilization might also be a factor. Cut back on ferts and just dose excel for a week and see. Try floating a piece and see if it responds to being closer to the light source, then you'll know if its the lighting.

Seachem, the folks who make excell and flourish, will admit when asked, that
anacharis and excel do not get along.

I also think you will benefit from reading on the forum about light and ferts, which need to be adjusted in your tank.

Ditto on the Flourish Excel. I have Anacharis in a low light (1.25 WPG) tank and it had been doing okay until I started adding Excel last week. Identical symptoms to yours in regards to transparent color and melting. I'm so happy with the growth of everything else that not having Anacharis is a small price for me.

Now I just have to find a low-light tolerant plant that will easily work as a cover for my heater.

Is that so? I've been dosing excel for a week in both my tanks. I've noticed the anacharis turning spirally and having smallish leaves but not melting. I don't mind since my other plants are doing well. I guess I'll dump the anacharis for something else.

I had the spindly shoots as well. The larger stems they were growing from were the first parts to die off and melt. I have a few stems left but as soon as they begin to melt, out they go.

Anyone have suggestions for a plant that grows up to 12" in low light? I'm going to need a plant to screen the heater once the Anacharis is gone.
