As much as I have been researching and reading old posts, I haven't been able to find a resource for fish compatibility. I don't know how to go about finding out what fish would be compatible with each other. I really really want at least 1 Angelfish. My tank is 55 gallons. (I am planning ahead here, but haven't purchased anything yet... still cycling) I would like 2 Angels but don't know if I can have 2 in the same tank. What would be a good set up to go with Angels? Can I have 2 in the same tank? What other fish can I have and how many? I really like the Silver Dollar fish, but don't know if they will mesh well with Angels. Any suggestions??

if you go with two angels get them together and they should grow up together and be fine... the only thing I would pay attention to when choosing your young angels is some angel are more aggressive than others and if you get two that don't charge the front of the tank at the store the hardest but still pay you interest you will have mellow fish... if in the off chance you get two angel and they pair up to breed they will be more agressive to the other tank mates but you would be extremely lucky to have that happen if you got just two

silver dollars can get about the same size as angels in body size and they prefer to be in groups... they also would eat any live plants you might keep(pardon me, I am biased against fish that eat my plants :)...

they would probably get along ok but there is the question of room, a 55 is good for a school of silver dollars OR a couple of angels and a group or two of smaller schooling fish

choices that can go with angels... any thing not excluded by the following: tends to nip fins, neon size or smaller(would be eaten by adult angel), and so big so as to eat angels or make the tank biologically overcrowded

there are asthetic considerations and I may have forgotten something but hope this helps

I have a dwarf guarami, a school of cardinals, 5 cherry barbs, 2 SAE in my 55 with two angels. Bottom type dwellers include several cories, a bristlenose and a rubberlip pleco. I still see a few otos in there from time to time. They don't seem to survive well for me.

Can I put a clown loach in there? Aren't they bottom dwellers? Since my tank is 55 gallons, do you think 2 would be enough?

clown loaches get big really big and they like to live in groups 4-5+ you could have clowns in the 55 but you would be pushing it to have very much else....

botia rostrata, known as sargent major loach or as my lfs calls them indian dwarf loaches is a peaceful loach that stays smaller but you have to provide hiding caves for them.... mine is in and out of his cave all the time

hyphessobrycon columbianus is a pretty schooling fish

you can look at different tetra species by going to fishbase.net and either searching tetra in common names or going down to the family scientific names and looking at characidae species... now I will have to add that not all the 900+ fish in that family can be kept in a aquarium but still the site is a resource if you want to know what a fish looks like when you only have the scientific name
